The Braves just gave Shelby Miller the bum’s rush out the back door. Julio Teheran will be next, won’t he? After all, Teheran is a good, young pitcher who is making considerably more than the major league minimum.
The problem with Teheran is that he’s not coming off Shelby Miller’s season. Teheran struggled throughout 2015, only getting it together towards the end, often against September call-up types. So conventional wisdom is that the Braves won’t sell low on Teheran.
Teheran pitched 200.2 inning last season with a 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Even with those numbers he’s a valuable addition to a contending pitching staff.
Teheran has been a Brave throughout his professional career. In the past that may have carried some weight, not anymore it appears. The Braves moved Andrelton Simmons for a couple futures without even blinking. In their present mode the Braves don’t seem to care about longevity and/or loyalty.
The Braves right-hander is only going to make $3.3 million in 2016 and has a team-friendly contract. But Atlanta is on the hook with him until 2020.
Don’t underestimate Braves GM John Coppolella and the power of dough. He’s hell bent on moving salary and even though the bounty for Teheran won’t like Shelby Miller, expect a trade soon. After all, the hidden agenda appears to be moving anything and everything that Frank Wren touched, except Freddie Freeman who is somehow going to escape the mass sell-off.
