New UGA head coach Kirby Smart has suffered five decommits since the former Dawgs player took over as head man. On the plus side, Smart has received re-affirmation from stud QB Jacob Eason and a huge commit from 5-star athlete, Richard Lecounte III.
The 5 de-commits are 4-star RB Devwah Whaley, 4-star QB Bailey Hockman, 4-star athlete DJ Dallas, 3-star WR Darion Anderson and 3-star DB Malek Young. Hockman and Dallas are 2017 recruits, Whaley, Young and Anderson are 2016.
De-commits are very common when a new coach takes over. Schools would like you to think players commit because they love the academics, school reputation and facilities. The fact of the mater is most players are looking to player under a coach and in a system that can help get them to the NFL.
Kirby Smart Future
New coach means bigger risk for the commits. Until he leads his team on the field and actually plays games, no one is sure what a new coach will do and what will be his approach. Most importantly, what will be his level of success. Kids want to play for winners.
Kirby Smart is a very fortunate man, when new head coaches take over football programs, they are usually in the dumpster. Not UGA, Mark Richt left the program in very good shape. A bowl win would give Georgia four 10-win seasons in the past five.
The catch-22 for Smart is that there is pressure in taking over a program that is in very good shape. As a head coach with zero head coaching experience, he has to learn fast and make few mistakes. His margin of error is small.
The reason Smart was hired is to take UGA to the ultimate level.
It is too early to tell Smart’s immediate impact on recruiting. At this point in time I’d give him a B+.
